Roses

I never realized just how hearty is the rose.

Each year for the past five years for Mothers' Day, my husband has taken the boys out to purchase a special rose bush and pot for my patio garden. They are all different varieties and colors, each a masterpiece of creation.

After a year of neglect, I thought I had lost them. The soil was dry and hard, and would accept no water to quench the poor roots. The spindly branches produced no buds, and what leaves grew were small and yellow/brown.

So I pruned them, and used a metal skewer to make channels in the soil in an effort to revive the starving plants. I gave them a good, deep watering, and hoped for the best.

Within a couple of weeks, these lovely, forgiving rose bushes graced us with a stunning array of blooms.

I now have a new hobby--obsession, really.
